KZN North Braces for Destructive Storms: Level 4 Warning Issued for Widespread Damage

A significant severe weather event is forecast to hit northern KwaZulu-Natal today, prompting the South African Weather Service (SAWS) to issue a serious Level 4 impact-based warning. The alert, valid from midday until midnight, predicts severe thunderstorms capable of causing substantial disruption and danger.

Residents across a wide swathe of districts—including Newcastle, Ulundi, uMhlathuze (Richards Bay), Jozini, and uPhongolo—are advised to prepare for a combination of hazards. The storms are expected to bring heavy downpours that could lead to flash flooding, large hail that may damage property and vehicles, damaging winds, and excessive lightning.

SAWS has outlined severe potential impacts, warning of:

  • Life-threatening conditions due to fast-flowing streams.
  • Major travel disruptions and road closures from flooded roads and damaged infrastructure.
  • Damage to homes, including informal settlements, and loss of agricultural livestock.

Authorities are urging the public to take immediate precautions. The key advice is to stay indoors if possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and never attempt to walk or drive through flooded areas. Those in low-lying or flood-prone regions should move valuables to higher ground and have an emergency plan ready.
