Ex-Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo has told the Madlanga Commission that a powerful drug cartel, the “Big Five,” has penetrated South Africa’s political sphere and law enforcement. Backed by WhatsApp evidence, he named individuals and detailed a scheme where a businessman allegedly made payments for ANC events linked to Minister Senzo Mchunu’s office, in return for sabotaging police investigations.
The cartel, also involved in kidnappings and murder, operates like a formal business with a headquarters in Gauteng and uses the country’s seaports for its international operations. The testimony marks the first official public account of the syndicate’s alleged reach.
