Johannesburg Mayor’s Fate: Speaker Denies Receiving Any Motion of No Confidence

A reported plot to oust Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Morero has hit a wall, with the City Council’s Speaker, Margrette Arnolds, officially denying that any motion of no confidence has been submitted to her office.

This comes after widespread media reports on Tuesday claimed that minority parties had formally tabled the motion, signalling potential political turmoil in the coalition-led metro. However, Speaker Arnolds has categorically shut down these reports, stating, “No motion was submitted to my office. If there was, I would tell you.”

The denial from the Speaker’s office creates a cloud of uncertainty. It raises questions about whether the motion was merely rumoured, if it was submitted through incorrect channels, or if political manoeuvring is happening behind the scenes before a formal challenge is launched.

For now, the mayor’s position appears secure, but the public denial does little to quell the speculation of growing dissatisfaction within the council, leaving the political future of Johannesburg’s leadership in a state of limbo.
