HRC Set to Publish Findings on Scholar Transport in North West

The South African Human Rights Commission (HRC) is scheduled to release a comprehensive report on scholar transport challenges in the North West on Monday morning.

The report follows an investigation launched last year after persistent complaints from communities, parents and education stakeholders. Concerns raised included the use of unroadworthy vehicles, frequent transport disruptions that caused learners to miss school, and the alleged non-payment of scholar transport service providers by government authorities.

As part of its inquiry, the commission conducted public hearings in Mahikeng, where submissions were received from teacher unions, civic organisations, and the provincial departments of Education and Transport Management. These stakeholders outlined systemic problems affecting the safety, reliability and sustainability of scholar transport in the province.

The HRC is expected to outline its findings and present recommendations aimed at improving oversight, ensuring learner safety, and addressing administrative and funding challenges within the scholar transport system.

The release of the report is anticipated to provide clarity on accountability and propose practical steps to resolve long-standing issues affecting thousands of learners across the North West.
