Residents and businesses in a part of Tshwane are set for a significant disruption as Eskom has announced a planned 15-hour power outage for next Tuesday. The lengthy shutdown is part of the power utility’s essential maintenance program aimed at bolstering the long-term reliability of the electricity grid.
The outage will specifically affect customers in Jericho Village, Winterveldt and will run from 8:00 in the morning until 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 21 October.
In a statement, Eskom moved to reassure customers, explaining that such planned maintenance is a necessary step to ensure safety and prevent future unplanned breakdowns. “It is essential for maintenance to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply,” the utility said.
This major outage in Winterveldt is not the only one scheduled for the day. Eskom has also flagged a separate, nine-hour power cut for customers in Muldersdrift and North Farms in Midrand. This maintenance window is set for the same Tuesday, from 8:30 to 18:00.
Critical Safety Warning Issued
With such extended periods without power, Eskom has issued a crucial safety reminder to all affected residents. The utility urges the public to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the outage. This precaution is vital to prevent accidents and electrocution when the power is eventually restored.
Eskom acknowledged the inconvenience such a long outage poses, stating, “Eskom would like to thank you for your cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience that this maintenance may cause.”
Residents in the affected areas are advised to plan their day accordingly. This includes making arrangements for the storage of perishable goods, ensuring electronic devices are fully charged in advance, and taking necessary precautions for security and personal comfort during the 15 hours.
