A bombshell claim has rocked the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, with a witness testifying that incarcerated businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala made a direct financial contribution of R500,000 to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s campaign for the ANC presidency.
The revelation, delivered by the witness identified only as ‘Witness C’, directly contradicts Mchunu’s recent testimony before a Parliamentary committee, where he denied having any personal relationship with the controversial figure.
Witness C told the commission that Matlala informed him of the substantial political donation on the very day of his arrest in May 2025. According to the testimony, Matlala boasted of his ties to the Minister, positioning himself as a financial backer for Mchunu’s ambitions to lead the ruling party.
The alleged support was not limited to cash. Witness C further stated that Matlala claimed to have provided plane tickets and accommodation for ANC members attending party functions, suggesting a pattern of using financial resources to cultivate political influence.
In a telling anecdote, Witness C recounted a conversation about Mchunu’s electoral prospects. “Yeah, I jokingly asked if he believed Minister Mchunu would succeed in the presidency campaign for the ANC,” the witness testified. “He indicated that now he did not believe that the Minister would win in his campaign, but he was afraid of discouraging him.”
This testimony places a glaring spotlight on the intersection of money, politics, and alleged criminality that the Madlanga Commission is tasked with investigating. It raises urgent questions about the nature of political fundraising and the potential influence of individuals facing serious criminal charges on the highest levels of law enforcement and government.
