Government Urges Parents to Keep Children Safe As Exam Season Comes To an End

The South African Government has called on parents, caregivers, and families to remain actively involved in their children’s activities as the matric exam period comes to an end. Through its #NoPensDown safety campaign, the government is urging families to help learners choose safe and supervised ways to celebrate, and to avoid dangerous, unsanctioned gatherings.

According to the statement, parental guidance remains crucial even after the last exam paper is written. “Be present in your children’s plans for the days ahead, helping them choose safe, organized spaces to celebrate and steering them away from risky, unregulated gatherings,” the government said.

The campaign highlights growing concerns around post-exam parties that have previously resulted in unsafe situations for young people. By staying engaged and informed, families can help prevent avoidable incidents.

“By staying involved, we strengthen our collective effort to keep our young people safe and out of harm’s way,” the message added.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to take an active interest in their children’s post-exam celebrations, host or support supervised events, and promote responsible behaviour. The government emphasised that safeguarding learners during this period is a shared responsibility.
