Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has acknowledged concerns raised by the TRC Cases Inquiry regarding cooperation from some government departments, while reaffirming the government’s full support for the commission.
The inquiry is investigating allegations of efforts to stop the prosecution of cases referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Minister Kubayi stated that the commission plays a vital role in promoting accountability and justice for victims and families affected by apartheid-era injustices.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Kubayi has reached out to arrange a meeting with the commission to address any administrative or procedural issues that caused delays in providing required information. She emphasized that a request to extend the submission deadline was made in good faith to ensure the commission receives all necessary material to perform its duties effectively.
“The government remains dedicated to maintaining transparency and collaboration with all independent commissions established by law,” Kubayi stated.
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development will continue to offer support to help the commission fulfil its responsibilities efficiently.
