Gauteng Small Business Operators’ Council (Gasboc) has suspended scholar transport operations

The Gauteng Small Bus Operators Council has accused the provincial education department of violating learners’ constitutional right to education. Members of the council have stopped operating their buses, saying they have not been paid by the department for several months.

The strike, which began last Monday, has affected more than 200000 learners across Gauteng. The Council’s Chairperson, Jabulani Khumalo, stated that they will not transport the children until the department pays all outstanding amounts. He emphasised that scholar transport and school meals are poverty alleviation programs and constitutional rights for children. He added that the government seems not to recognise these rights or the importance of providing a safe transport environment.

The Gauteng Education Department acknowledged that the strike has disrupted learning and teaching. Spokesperson Steve Mabona said they are working continuously to pay the operators. He explained that financial constraints mean they can only pay certain amounts at a time. They have paid for December and are finalising payments for November with the Treasury. The department will also need to verify invoices for January before making further payments.
