A four-year-old child has been swept away by rising floodwaters in Limpopo as persistent heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across several parts of the country.
According to preliminary reports, the child was caught in fast-moving water during flooding triggered by recent downpours. Emergency services, together with community members, launched a search operation shortly after the incident. However, efforts have been severely hampered by dangerous conditions and swollen rivers. Authorities have confirmed that search-and-rescue teams remain on high alert as operations continue.
In a related development, a body believed to be that of a 45-year-old woman who drowned in Msholozi near Mbombela in Mpumalanga has been recovered. The woman reportedly went missing after attempting to cross an overflowing stream in the area. Police say she was swept away at the same location where a two-year-old toddler drowned earlier this week, on Tuesday.
The incidents have heightened concerns about public safety amid ongoing heavy rainfall. Disaster management officials and law enforcement have once again urged residents to exercise extreme caution, warning against attempting to cross overflowing rivers, streams, and submerged bridges.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely as more rain is forecast, while communities in affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant and prioritise safety.
