Five alleged suspects were shot dead during a shootout with police in the Bester area of Inanda, north of Durban, on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed.
According to police, the incident unfolded during a law enforcement operation in the area, when officers came under fire from a group of suspects. Police responded, leading to an exchange of gunfire that left five suspects fatally wounded at the scene.
Preliminary information suggests that the suspects were linked to criminal activities in the area, although authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the operation or the offences the suspects were allegedly involved in. No injuries to police officers have been reported at this stage.
The scene has been cordoned off as forensic teams conduct investigations, while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is expected to be notified, in line with standard procedure following fatal police shootings.
KwaZulu-Natal police say further details will be communicated as investigations continue.
This is a developing story.
