Durban Hairstylist Breaks Silence on Alleged Abuse Amid GBV Crisis

Earlier today, Durban-based hairstylist Snenhlanhla Mthembu took to social media to break her silence about what she alleges has been ongoing abuse by her partner.

The revelation comes less than a month after South Africa witnessed a massive national shutdown calling for an end to gender-based violence (GBV), a crisis that has been declared a national pandemic. Mthembu’s story has once again thrust the country into the spotlight over the continued abuse of women despite repeated calls for action.

Mthembu shared sensitive images on social media, showing injuries she says were sustained during the alleged abuse. She also posted evidence indicating that she had previously reported the matter at several police stations, including Lamontville and Umlazi. According to Mthembu, these cases were allegedly not followed up.

The case has sparked widespread public condemnation online, with many South Africans expressing outrage and demanding accountability. Award-winning actress Nomzamo Mbatha was among those who amplified the case, sharing a post expressing her anger and heartbreak over Mthembu’s condition.

“As we speak, she is currently in ICU with burn wounds on her face and body, sustained while trying to fight for her freedom from this criminal,” Mbatha said.

The incident has reignited national conversations around GBV, policing failures, and the urgent need for stronger protection and justice for survivors.
