Driver Rams Toll Boom to Dodge R73 Fee Near Pretoria

A brazen act of toll evasion erupted into a dangerous high-speed incident near Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon, after a motorist allegedly drove a stolen vehicle through a closed boom gate at the Donkerpoort Toll Plaza on the N1, narrowly missing pedestrians and triggering a multi-agency pursuit.

The dramatic scene unfolded just after 3:30 PM at the northbound plaza, a critical revenue and security checkpoint. According to initial reports from the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and eyewitness accounts, the driver of a silver Toyota Hilux bakkie approached the “Stop and Pay” lane but showed no signs of slowing down.

“Instead of stopping to pay the R73 fee for a light motor vehicle, the driver accelerated directly toward the lowered boom gate,” stated SANRAL spokesperson, Vusi Mona. “The vehicle smashed through the wooden barrier, sending splinters flying across several lanes, and fled the scene at high speed northbound on the N1.”

The violent breach immediately activated the plaza’s security protocols. Toll officials, who retreated to safety, alerted the National Traffic Police and the South African Police Service (SAPS). A coordinated chase was initiated, with marked and unmarked vehicles from both services pursuing the suspect.

“This was not merely a case of fare evasion; it was a serious criminal act that endangered the lives of our staff, other motorists, and pedestrians in the area,” Mona emphasized. “The force used to break the boom indicates a premeditated decision to violate the law with no regard for public safety.”

The pursuit continued for approximately 25 kilometres along the busy national highway, causing minor disruptions as traffic was cautiously managed around the speeding convoy. The chase culminated near the Rooihuiskraal area, where tactical officers successfully used a controlled boxing-in maneuver to bring the fleeing bakkie to a halt without further incident.

Shocking Discovery: Stolen Vehicle, Suspect with Multiple Warrants

Upon apprehending the 34-year-old male driver, authorities made a series of alarming discoveries. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota Hilux had been reported stolen in a carjacking incident in Johannesburg two weeks prior. Furthermore, a check of the suspect’s identity indicated he was wanted on three separate warrants of arrest, including charges related to possession of suspected stolen property and previous traffic violations.

“This incident escalated far beyond a toll fee,” said Captain Mavela Masondo, SAPS Pretoria spokesperson. “We are dealing with a suspect involved in multiple serious crimes. The reckless behaviour at the toll plaza adds charges of malicious damage to property, reckless and negligent driving, and contravention of the National Road Traffic Act. He is currently in custody and will face a litany of charges in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.”

SANRAL and Police Condemn “Unacceptable” Act, Warn of Consequences

Authorities have strongly condemned the act, warning that toll plaza security is robust and linked directly to law enforcement networks.

“Our systems are integrated. Every vehicle that passes through, whether it pays or not, is captured,” Mona explained. “Evading a toll is never worth it. The moment you breach a gate, you transition from a minor infringement to a priority target for a serious criminal response. We have a zero-tolerance policy for this behaviour, and the judicial consequences will be severe.”

The Donkerpoort plaza suffered minor operational disruptions as the damaged lane was closed for cleanup and repairs. SANRAL estimates the cost of the damage and lost revenue to be in the tens of thousands of rands, costs ultimately borne by the law-abiding public.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about road safety and enforcement, with motorists at the plaza expressing shock at the audacity of the crime. “I just heard a huge bang and saw this bakkie flying through,” said one witness, Thando Dlamini. “It’s terrifying to think what could have happened if someone was walking there. All for R73? It’s madness.”

The suspect remains in police custody as the investigation continues, with the possibility of further charges being added.
