Disaster management teams mobilised in Mpumalanga as heavy rains wreak havoc

MBOMBELA, MPUMALANGA – The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga has activated all disaster management teams to respond to the severe impacts of ongoing heavy rains across the province.

According to department spokesperson Freddy Ngobe, the torrential rains have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, farms, schools, and around 500 homes, with at least 14 fatalities reported so far.

“We are currently mopping up to ensure we understand the full extent of the damage, which is expected to run into millions. Once assessments are complete, a comprehensive report will be submitted at the national level for possible intervention,” Ngobe said. “In the meantime, the department, in partnership with stakeholders, is providing humanitarian relief, including food parcels, sponges, tarpaulins, collapsible structures, and psychosocial support to the families most affected.”

The Public Service Commission is also conducting inspections of schools damaged by the storms. So far, 28 schools have been affected, prompting the department to procure 134 mobile classrooms to support learners. Officials are engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure that students do not fall behind and to secure additional funding for repairs.

Authorities have urged communities across Mpumalanga to remain vigilant as the heavy rains continue, warning of potential further damage and disruptions.
