Department of Social Development condemns adults who allow children to consume alcohol as shown in a viral social media video

Pretoria, 28 December 2025: The Department of Social Development has expressed deep concern over a video circulating on social media that shows children drinking alcohol in the presence of adults. The Department is committed to ensuring that anyone who encouraged or allowed this behaviour is held accountable.

An investigation into the incident is currently under way and appropriate action will be taken. The Department urges anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about where it occurred to come forward and report it. While the festive season is meant to be a time of care, rest and renewal, it is also a period when the dangers linked to excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse increase, especially among children and young people.

Such behaviour has serious and harmful effects on individuals, families and communities. Parents, caregivers and families are reminded of their duty to remain alert and to protect children during this time.

Festive celebrations should encourage healthy family values, positive role modelling and safe spaces that support the wellbeing of children and young people. The Department of Social Development remains firm in upholding the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, which seeks to advance the rights and protection of children.

“I call on all South Africans to refrain from excessive alcohol use and to reject drugs during the festive season and beyond. Alcohol and drugs take away precious family moments, increase violence, contribute to road deaths and destroy the future of our children and youth. To the young people of South Africa, choose enjoyment through games, sport and quality time with family during this festive period instead of alcohol or drugs. You are valuable and your future is important. Remaining sober allows you to celebrate the festive season safely,” said the Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe.

Anyone who is struggling with alcohol or drug dependency, or who knows someone who is, is encouraged to visit a Department of Social Development office or contact 0800 121314 or send an SMS to 32312. Members of the public are also advised to ensure that any treatment centre is registered with the Department of Social Development before admitting loved ones.
