DEADLY N4 CRASH: One Killed After BMW Collides With Minibus Near Malelane

A tragic multi-vehicle collision on the N4 toll road near Malelane has resulted in one fatality and left another person with serious injuries, casting a somber shadow over the busy festive season travel period. The crash, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, involved a black BMW sedan, a minibus taxi, and a truck in what authorities have described as a high-impact, side-sweep type accident.

According to preliminary reports from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, the incident took place on the key eastbound lane of the N4, a major arterial route connecting Gauteng to Mozambique and servicing heavy holiday traffic towards the Kruger National Park and coastal destinations.

“It appears the driver of the BMW sedan lost control, side-swiping the minibus taxi before colliding with a truck,” said provincial traffic spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi. “The force of the collision was severe. Tragically, one occupant of the BMW, a male, was declared dead on the scene. Another individual from the same vehicle sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency care.”

Mmusi confirmed that the drivers of the minibus taxi and the truck escaped with minor injuries and shock. None of the taxi passengers required hospitalization. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along the N4 for several hours on Sunday afternoon, with emergency services, including Advanced Life Support paramedics, multiple traffic police units, and tow trucks, working to clear the wreckage and manage the scene. A lengthy backlog of vehicles built up as one lane was closed for the investigation and recovery operation.

“This is a devastating reminder of the consequences of a moment’s lapse in concentration, especially on roads that are currently experiencing high volumes of traffic,” said MEC for Community Safety, Gabisile Shongwe. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased. We urge every single motorist to please, please exercise patience, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid reckless overtaking maneuvers. Arriving alive is the only goal that matters.”

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Malelane SAPS, with speeding and possible driver error being considered as primary factors. The warning comes just a day after joint alerts were issued by SANRAL and the provincial government regarding hazardous wet weather conditions on other key routes like the R40.

This incident marks a grim start to the official festive season road safety campaign in the province, prompting renewed calls from authorities for heightened vigilance from all road users.
