CATA Calls for Surveillance Cameras at Nyanga Taxi Rank Amid Ongoing Violence

The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) has called for surveillance cameras to be installed at the Nyanga Taxi Rank following a series of violent incidents at the facility.

The appeal comes after nine minibuses were set alight at the rank last week, marking the second such attack in just over a year. The area has also experienced several fatal shootings in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of taxi operators.

On Monday, taxi services were disrupted when CATA-affiliated drivers marched to the Nyanga Police Station to protest what they described as slow progress in police investigations into the violence.

CATA secretary Nkululeko Sityebi said authorities must treat the cases with urgency and provide regular updates to affected operators.

Sityebi stressed that those responsible for the attacks should be arrested and that law enforcement must ensure transparency around the status of the investigations.

He said taxi operators want more than confirmation that cases have been opened, adding that the industry expects visible progress and consistent communication from police as the investigations continue.
