Cape Town Firefighters Wage All-Night Battle Against Raging Deer Park Blaze

Cape Town’s firefighting crews endured a grueling and relentless night, locked in a fierce battle against a major wildfire that erupted on the slopes of Table Mountain near the suburb of Vredehoek. The blaze, which broke out in the Deer Park area, required a coordinated large-scale response, with teams from the City of Cape Town joining forces with SANParks firefighters to prevent the flames from spreading further.

Strong, gusting winds proved to be a significant adversary throughout the operation, repeatedly fanning the flames and challenging containment efforts. The difficult terrain on the mountain’s slopes added another layer of complexity to the firefighting mission, as crews worked tirelessly to establish firebreaks and douse hotspots in the volatile conditions.

SANParks spokesperson, Charles Phahlane, confirmed the collaborative effort was underway but cautioned against speculating on the fire’s origin. “We are not able to speculate at this stage what could have caused the fire,” Phahlane stated. “Once we have contained it, the investigators will come through and investigate and check what could have caused this fire.”

However, he highlighted a recurring pattern of risk in the region, noting, “What we know is that most of the fires in the Western Cape or around the Table Mountain National Park are caused by human activity. Because we are close to the urban areas and people do come up the mountain.” He added that while rangers are deployed to prevent such incidents, the precise cause of this specific fire remains unknown pending a formal investigation.

The all-night operation underscores the persistent threat of wildfires to the Cape Peninsula, especially during periods of dry and windy weather, and highlights the critical work of emergency services in protecting both the natural heritage and urban fringe of the city.
