The Alexandra Randburg Midrand Taxi Association (ARMTA) has confirmed its chairperson, Molefe Moekeletsi, was killed in a shooting ambush in Marlboro on Thursday.
According to the association, Moekeletsi came under fire while driving, causing his vehicle to crash into two others. Witnesses reported multiple gunshots during the attack, one of which struck a security company vehicle in the area at the time.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the incident is being investigated as murder with two counts and attempted murder with three counts.
“This is after a shooting incident that happened here in Marlborough on Eighth Street, where two vehicles that were driving together were ambushed by unknown suspects,” said Nevhuhulwi.
The motive for the brazen daylight shooting remains unclear, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. The attack has raised concerns about safety and potential renewed tensions within the taxi industry.
ARMTA said it is devastated by the loss of its leader and has called for calm as investigations continue.
