Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on national security says it will forward a consolidated list of more than 100 written questions to Cyril Ramaphosa by close of business on Wednesday.
The committee, established to probe concerns relating to national security matters, has given political parties represented in the structure an opportunity to review the compiled questions and propose amendments before the submission deadline.
Among the key issues raised are questions relating to the extent of the President’s knowledge regarding the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team. Parliament’s legal advisers have recommended that the questions be submitted this week to ensure the President is afforded at least seven days to respond.
The committee itself faces a reporting deadline at the end of next month.
Chairperson Soviet Lekganyane has urged Members of Parliament to finalise their inputs without delay.
“We must check those questions and confirm that we are satisfied. By Wednesday close of business, we should have received responses from members. If not, we will proceed to send the questions to the Office of the President,” Lekganyane said.
Meanwhile, the committee has received correspondence from several stakeholders, including Anglo American executive Themba Mkhwanazi, as well as media organisations Daily Maverick and Media24. The submissions reportedly call for evidence to be properly considered before any findings are dismissed or challenged.
The committee’s inquiry forms part of Parliament’s broader oversight role amid heightened scrutiny over national security governance.
