A Village in Mourning: Limpopo Police Probe Culpable Homicide in Death of Rising Star “Dr Nel”

The vibrant rhythms of the Lekompo music scene have fallen silent in Ga-Seleka, replaced by a pall of grief and unanswered questions. Limpopo police have opened a culpable homicide investigation following the tragic death of local artist Molimisi “Dr Nel” Baatsi, a 31-year-old rising star whose life was abruptly ended on a village road in the early hours of Sunday, November 2, 2025.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the grim discovery was made around 04h00 on Phetogo Drive. Officers responding to a distress call found the body of the Tshwara Fase hitmaker lying face down. Paramedics from Witpoort Emergency Services arrived promptly but could only confirm the somber reality: Baatsi was declared dead at the scene.

The hours leading up to the tragedy paint a picture of an artist in his element. Preliminary reports indicate that Baatsi had been the star performer hours earlier at the grand opening of a local pub, where he electrified the crowd with his signature sound. In a haunting and now deeply poignant digital footprint, his last Facebook Live video, posted just hours before his death, captured the artist in high spirits, laughing, interacting with fans, and doing what he loved most—entertaining. The video, which has since been widely shared by mourning fans, stands as a chilling final testament to his talent and vibrant energy.

“The circumstances leading to his death are still under investigation,” stated Colonel Ledwaba, emphasizing that the case is being treated with the utmost seriousness. “A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. We are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Phetogo Drive between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning to come forward.”

The case has sent shockwaves far beyond the Tom Burke policing area, deeply shaking the close-knit Limpopo entertainment community. Baatsi, known for his catchy hooks and authentic lyrics that narrated life in the villages, was widely considered one of the most promising voices of the burgeoning Lekompo genre. His sudden and violent death is not just the loss of a musician, but the silencing of a cultural storyteller at the peak of his potential.

Tributes have poured in on social media from fellow artists, producers, and legions of fans, all expressing disbelief and mourning the bright light extinguished too soon. As the police, led by Detective Sergeant Lesiba Tsebe, piece together the final moments of Dr Nel’s life, a community is left to grapple with a profound loss, clinging to his music while seeking justice for the artist who brought their stories to life.
