A Premeditated Tragedy: New Timeline Reveals Nathi Mthethwa’s Planned Final Days in Paris

In the wake of the tragic death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, a clearer and more poignant timeline of his final days has emerged, painting a picture of a premeditated act that unfolded in a luxury Parisian hotel room. New details from French authorities and the ambassador’s family reveal a sequence of events that began with a booking made nearly two weeks before his disappearance, culminating in a personal tragedy that has sent shockwaves through the South African political landscape.

The senior diplomat, a former long-serving Minister of Police and Arts and Culture, had meticulously arranged his stay at the upmarket Hyatt Regency hotel. According to statements from both French police and the family, Ambassador Mthethwa made the reservation on September 15th, securing a room for a stay that was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 27th, and extend into Sunday, September 28th, 2025. However, in a detail that adds a layer of complexity to the timeline, he did not arrive on those initial dates. Instead, he proactively contacted the hotel to postpone his check-in to Monday, September 29th.

A Distressing Sequence of Events

This rescheduled date would become the day of his disappearance. Family spokesperson Sifiso Buthelezi, a former South African finance deputy minister, confirmed the sequence of events after being briefed by French police.

“He ended up postponing it to the 29th (Monday) and that is the day on which he disappeared. On the 29th indeed he came, he checked in, and that is why they were checking the cameras. That is the information they gave us,” Buthelezi told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika.

The ambassador’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, who is currently in France with other family members, saw him for the final time on Monday afternoon when he left to attend a cocktail event. The true depth of the unfolding crisis became apparent later that evening when she received a deeply distressing message from her husband. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau officially confirmed the content of this final communication, stating it was a message “in which he apologised to her and expressed his intention to end his life.”

The Investigation Points to a Deliberate Act

The subsequent investigation by French authorities has, thus far, found no evidence of foul play. As previously reported, the ambassador had booked a room on the 22nd floor, and the secured window had been forced open with a pair of scissors left at the scene. There were no signs of a struggle.

Providing the preliminary conclusion, Prosecutor Beccuau stated, “Initial investigations suggest that this could have been a deliberate act, without the intervention of a third party.” She emphasized that the investigation remains open to collect all pertinent details and provide a comprehensive report.

The tragic end for Ambassador Mthethwa, who had served as South Africa’s envoy to France since December 2023, has prompted an outpouring of grief. President Cyril Ramaphosa described the diplomat’s death as “untimely” and “a moment of deep grief,” paying tribute to a man who “served our nation in diverse capacities during a lifetime that has ended prematurely and traumatically.” The emerging timeline now confirms a deeply personal tragedy that was set in motion days before it ultimately transpired, leaving a nation and a family to mourn a life of service cut short.
