A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation conducted in the Pretoria North and Akasia policing areas over the weekend resulted in the arrest of 325 suspects, as authorities intensified efforts to combat crime across the Tshwane district.
The operation, known as Operation Shanela, was led by the Tshwane District Commissioner, Samuel Thine, and involved a coordinated effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), the Department of Home Affairs, and local Community Policing Forums (CPF).
The first phase of the operation began on Friday evening, focusing on suspect-tracing operations carried out by detectives. By Saturday morning, 241 suspects had been arrested for a range of serious crimes. These included one suspect for murder, five for attempted murder, six for armed robbery, 11 for rape, and 78 for gender-based violence-related offences.
The second phase took place on Saturday evening and was carried out by uniformed law enforcement officers to enhance visible policing and improve public safety. Three operational teams were deployed to conduct roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and targeted patrols in identified crime hotspots.
During the operation, officers searched 469 individuals and 252 vehicles. Twenty-six motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 14 AARTO infringement notices worth R9 750 were issued.
Authorities also detained 43 undocumented foreign nationals during the operation. Immigration officials from the Department of Home Affairs are currently processing them for deportation.
Law enforcement also targeted illegal liquor trading in the area. Fourteen liquor outlets were inspected, resulting in two establishments being closed and fined for failing to comply with regulations. Liquor totalling 64,070 ml was confiscated during the inspections.
In addition, 12 individuals were fined for drinking alcohol in public spaces.
Patrols in identified hotspots led to the arrest of two suspects for drug dealing after they were found in possession of illegal drugs. Another suspect was arrested for contravening the Medicines Act after being found with unauthorised tablets.
Major-General Thine commended the officers involved in the operation for their dedication and commitment to improving safety in the district.
Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb crime and maintain law and order in the Tshwane district.
