The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has dismissed four officials from its Nebo Local Office in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, after they were found guilty of involvement in a R33 million social grants fraud scheme.
According to SASSA, an internal investigation revealed that the officials manipulated the social grants system in collaboration with external syndicates, resulting in fraudulent payments amounting to R33 million.
Following the investigation, disciplinary proceedings were held, and all four officials were dismissed. They appealed the decision, but the Appeals Committee upheld the dismissals, citing the seriousness of the misconduct and the need to protect public funds.
SASSA says it has a zero tolerance approach to fraud and corruption and remains committed to ensuring that social grants reach the rightful beneficiaries who depend on them.
Regional Executive Manager Ms Mmapula Pheeha said fraudulent activities undermine public trust in the agency and deprive vulnerable communities of essential financial support. She said SASSA will continue to take firm action against employees found guilty of misconduct.
To prevent similar incidents, SASSA says it is strengthening its internal systems through enhanced monitoring, tighter internal controls and ongoing ethics training for staff.
The agency has urged the public to remain confident in the social grant system as it continues to safeguard public resources and combat fraud.
