Police to Analyse Weapons After Three Suspected CIT Robbers Killed in Tshwane Shootout

Police will subject firearms recovered at the scene of a dramatic shootout on the R80 Mabopane Highway to ballistic testing, following the deaths of three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers and the arrest of a fourth suspect. The confrontation unfolded on Monday north of Pretoria, marking the latest development in the ongoing battle against organised robbery syndicates operating in Gauteng.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, officers from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and specialised tactical units had been tracking the suspects, who were allegedly en route to commit a CIT heist. When police attempted to intercept the vehicle on the R80, the suspects opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire. Three of the suspects were fatally wounded, while a fourth was apprehended after attempting to flee on foot.

Several firearms were recovered at the scene, along with the suspects’ vehicle and equipment believed to be used in the planned robbery. Police have confirmed that the weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in other crimes, including previous CIT robberies and murders. This forensic analysis is a critical step in linking the syndicate to a broader pattern of violent crime.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court in due course, facing charges including attempted armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and attempted murder of police officers. The Hawks have indicated that further arrests are possible as the investigation continues.

CIT robberies remain a serious challenge in South Africa, with armed gangs targeting cash delivery vehicles in increasingly brazen attacks. The shootout on the R80 is a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the ruthlessness of the criminals they pursue.

Police have praised the swift and decisive action of the officers involved, noting that the operation prevented what could have been a violent robbery with potentially fatal consequences for security personnel and bystanders. For the community of Mabopane and surrounding areas, the incident serves as both a warning and a reassurance: the criminals are armed and dangerous, but the police are closing in.
