The appearance of alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala before the Madlanga Commission has been postponed to 1 September 2026.
The postponement follows legal arguments by Matlala’s lawyer, Annelene van den Heever, who said her client is due to stand trial next week on attempted murder charges relating to his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane. She argued that forcing Matlala to testify before the commission could affect his constitutional right against self-incrimination and prejudice his criminal case.
During the proceedings, Commission Chairperson, retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, questioned whether the commission could continue with evidence on matters that are unrelated to the pending criminal trial. He maintained that some issues could be addressed without infringing on Matlala’s constitutional rights.
After hearing the arguments, Justice Madlanga postponed Matlala’s appearance until 1 September 2026.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of criminal infiltration and corruption within law enforcement and other state institutions.
