The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to subpoena the doctor of North West businessman Suliman Carrim after evidence emerged questioning the legitimacy of his medical absence from the proceedings.
Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson told the Commission that Carrim’s doctor would be subpoenaed to verify the medical grounds on which he sought a postponement.
The move follows information allegedly placing Carrim at a shopping centre in the Western Cape, where he was reportedly seen having lunch while he was said to be receiving medical treatment outside Gauteng.
The Commission heard that the alleged sighting raises concerns over the validity of Carrim’s medical excuse, prompting investigators to seek evidence directly from his medical practitioner.
The subpoena forms part of the Commission’s efforts to establish whether Carrim’s absence was justified as it continues its inquiry into allegations under investigation.
