The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to hear testimony on the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) as its public hearings resume on Tuesday.
The Commission, established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September last year, is investigating allegations of political interference, corruption and criminal infiltration within the criminal justice system.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says the hearings will focus on allegations that criminal networks have infiltrated the JMPD, as well as alleged collusion between JMPD officers and criminal syndicates.
“Upon the resumption of its public hearings on Tuesday, the Commission will shift focus to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), one of the law enforcement agencies listed in the Commission’s terms of reference,” Michaels said.
The testimony is expected to examine the alleged links between members of the metro police and criminal networks, with the Commission seeking to establish the extent of possible interference and corruption within the department.
Tuesday marks day 173 of the Commission’s hearings, as it continues its investigation into allegations affecting South Africa’s criminal justice system.
