The government has strongly criticised former president Jacob Zuma following reports that he met with Gupta family members during a visit to India.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the reported meeting undermines South Africa’s laws, particularly as the country continues efforts to extradite the fugitive Gupta brothers to face corruption-related charges.
The controversy has also raised questions about the reported involvement of South Africa’s High Commissioner to India. According to government officials, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation is seeking an explanation regarding the diplomat’s conduct.
Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola has requested a report on the matter and indicated that appropriate action will be considered if any wrongdoing is established.
The Gupta brothers remain wanted in South Africa in connection with allegations linked to state capture. Ajay Gupta was identified by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture as one of the key figures behind the state capture project.
The reported meeting has sparked renewed public debate over accountability, the extradition of the Gupta brothers, and South Africa’s ongoing efforts to address corruption linked to the state capture era.
