In a significant interception that has dealt a blow to drug trafficking networks operating through the Mother City, authorities have arrested a man at Cape Town International Airport after discovering more than 50 kilograms of suspected khat concealed within his luggage. According to police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released pending formal charges, raised the suspicion of customs and narcotics officers during routine screening procedures. Upon a thorough search of his checked baggage, officials uncovered multiple large parcels wrapped in plastic and tape, hidden among clothing and personal effects. The contents of the packages tested positive for khat, a schedule-controlled substance in South Africa that is commonly chewed for its mild stimulant effects but is illegal to possess, trade, or export in large quantities. The total weight of the confiscated consignment was confirmed to be just over 50 kilograms, with an estimated street value that authorities are still calculating.
Khat, which originates primarily from the Horn of Africa, is frequently smuggled via air routes to supply demand among diaspora communities and recreational users in various international destinations. The Cape Town International Airport has become a known transit point for such shipments, prompting law enforcement to maintain heightened vigilance. The Hawks, South Africa’s elite Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have been brought in to assist with the case, given the scale of the seizure and the likelihood of a broader syndicate operating behind the scenes.
The arrested individual is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon, where he will face charges of dealing in and possession of an illegal substance. Police have commended the vigilance of the officers involved and have reiterated their commitment to clamping down on drug smuggling at all ports of entry. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities exploring whether the suspect has links to larger trafficking operations that may have been using the airport as a logistical hub.
