The Gauteng Department of Health says it will open a case with the South African Police Service (SAPS) following a protest by former Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) participants at its Sedibeng District Health Services offices.
The former participants reportedly protested by littering at the entrance of the district offices on Monday, 21 September, while calling for their contracts to be reinstated and extended.
The department has condemned the conduct, saying it disrupted the orderly functioning of its facilities and undermined their cleanliness and dignity.
According to the department, the contracts of the affected EPWP participants ended in July 2026. A new group of participants began their contracts on 14 September, with their contracts expected to run until March 2027.
The department has stressed that EPWP positions are temporary work opportunities and do not guarantee permanent employment or extensions.
It has urged those who are unhappy with the termination of their contracts to use established channels to raise their concerns rather than disrupting public facilities or services.
The Sedibeng District Management will now approach local police to address the reported conduct through the appropriate legal processes.
The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the matter would be dealt with through the relevant channels.
