The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has urged parents and guardians to take extra precautions to protect children during the school holidays, warning that children are often more vulnerable when left in the care of others.
The department stressed that the safety and well-being of children should remain a top priority, especially during the holiday period when many spend more time at home or under the supervision of caregivers.
Parents have been advised never to leave their children in the care of an adult they do not trust. Before entrusting someone with a child’s care, the department encourages parents to know the caregiver well, verify their background, establish clear rules, monitor interactions with the child, and teach children to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
The awareness campaign forms part of the Gauteng government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection and promote safer communities.
Authorities have also encouraged communities to remain vigilant and report any concerns involving the safety or well-being of children to the relevant law enforcement or child protection authorities.
