Metropolitan Launches South Africa’s First No-Lapse Funeral Insurance

In a groundbreaking move set to reshape the country’s insurance landscape, Metropolitan has unveiled South Africa’s first-ever no-lapse funeral insurance product, specifically designed to address the unique financial realities of millions of citizens who earn irregular incomes. The No-Lapse Funeral Growth Plan offers a flexible and accessible entry point, allowing policyholders to secure immediate funeral coverage with a minimum payment of just R200 and guaranteeing lifelong protection once they have accumulated R1,500 in contributions within a 12-month period.

Unlike traditional funeral policies that penalise missed or late payments with immediate cancellation and loss of benefits, Metropolitan’s innovation recognises that many South Africans—particularly those in the gig economy, informal sector, and social grant recipients—experience fluctuating cash flows. The product eliminates the risk of lapsing, provided policyholders meet the minimum annual threshold. This is made possible through a seamless integration with everyday retail habits; contributions can be made conveniently at major retailers such as Pick n Pay, while policy management, including top-ups and beneficiary updates, is handled intuitively via WhatsApp, removing the barriers of complex paperwork and call centre queues.

The cover extends beyond the primary policyholder to include their life partner and children up to the age of 21, with the benefit amount growing incrementally as policyholders make additional top-ups. This allows families to build their safety net at their own pace, without the anxiety of losing everything during lean months.

Metropolitan CEO Peter Tshiguvho explained that the product was born out of a deep analysis of market behaviour, revealing that approximately R6 billion in funeral cover is lost to lapses annually, affecting an estimated 11.9 million people in the foundation market. “We saw a fundamental mismatch between how insurance products are structured and how people actually live and earn,” Tshiguvho said. “Our No-Lapse Funeral Growth Plan is about dignity, stability, and ensuring that when a loved one passes, families can afford a proper send-off without financial distress.” The launch is expected to drive financial inclusion and set a new benchmark for customer-centric insurance in South Africa.
