Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has withdrawn from his plea agreement with the State in the R228 million SAPS tender corruption case linked to his company, Medicare24.
Matlala made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, where his legal team confirmed that he would no longer proceed with the plea agreement that had been under discussion with prosecutors.
The case relates to allegations of corruption involving a multimillion-rand South African Police Service (SAPS) tender awarded to Medicare24. Matlala is facing several charges connected to the matter, including fraud, corruption, money laundering, and contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act and the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
Following the withdrawal from the plea agreement, the court postponed the matter to 11 September 2026 for further proceedings.
The development means the case will continue through the normal court process, with prosecutors expected to proceed to trial unless a new agreement is reached before the next court appearance. The matter remains one of the country’s most closely watched corruption cases due to the value of the SAPS tender and the serious allegations against Matlala.
