The Tshwane Metro Police Department is using the power of sport to send a strong message against gender-based violence.
The department’s Social Crime Prevention Unit hosted “Sports Against Crime” at Ushaka Sports Grounds in Soshanguve on 3 October 2026, bringing the community together through sport while raising awareness about respect and violence against women and girls.
The message from Social Crime Prevention Unit Superintendent Letlape was clear that sport teaches discipline, teamwork and respect, and those same values must be reflected in how people treat one another.
During the games, participants were reminded that no one owns a woman or a girlfriend. Just as no player is above the rules on the field, no partner has the right to control, threaten or hurt another person.
TMPD also stressed that gender-based violence is not a private family matter, but a crime that affects entire families and communities. Men and boys were urged to speak up, hold each other accountable and take a stand when they witness abuse.
Further TMPD is encouraging anyone experiencing or witnessing gender-based violence to report it.
