President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared Wednesday, 4 November 2026, a public holiday to allow South Africans to participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The decision is aimed at giving voters sufficient time to cast their ballots without having to worry about work commitments or other daily responsibilities.
The public holiday will also help minimise disruptions, particularly as the elections take place during the matric examination period and schools may be used as voting stations.
South Africans will vote for municipal leaders who will make decisions affecting essential services such as water, electricity, roads, sanitation and local development.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged eligible voters to participate under its campaign message: “Get Up, Show Up, Vote.”
