Parliament’s Impeachment Committee to Meet This Week

Parliament’s Impeachment Committee will meet later this week to discuss its draft terms of reference and the appointment of evidence leaders.

This comes as Parliament prepares to file papers in the Western Cape High Court regarding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent application to stop the committee’s work while a review of the Section 89 report is underway.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has said Parliament will abide by the court’s decision and will submit an explanatory affidavit. Committee chairperson Makashule Gana has indicated that he will oppose the application, as he is cited in the court papers.

The impeachment inquiry is being conducted under Parliament’s Section 89 rules. The process aims to determine whether there is sufficient evidence of serious misconduct, a violation of the Constitution or the law, or an inability to perform the duties of office.

Further developments are expected as the court case and committee proceedings continue.
