The City of Tshwane has expressed its deep sorrow following the passing of Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.
In a statement issued on Friday, Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya extended condolences to the professor’s family, colleagues and the university community, describing her death as a significant loss to both Tshwane and South Africa’s academic sector.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family of Professor Matsha-Erasmus and to Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University,” Moya said.
The mayor said Professor Matsha-Erasmus played an instrumental role in strengthening partnerships between the City of Tshwane and academic institutions, particularly through strategic engagements aimed at advancing education, research and development.
“Professor Matsha-Erasmus’ passing is a loss for South Africa and Tshwane’s broader academic fraternity,” Moya said.
Professor Matsha-Erasmus was recognised for her dedication to education, research and training in the health sciences. She made extensive contributions to African scientific research, particularly in the fields of diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.
Moya said the late academic’s legacy would be remembered for guiding the strategic and operational direction of the university and for inspiring future generations of medical and scientific practitioners.
“May the professor’s legacy continue to inspire the next generation of medical and scientific practitioners,” the mayor added.
Her passing marks the loss of a respected academic leader whose work helped advance health sciences education and research in South Africa.
