A 69-year-old Canadian tourist has died after being fatally wounded in an apparent accidental shooting at a concession-operated braai picnic area near Phabeni Gate in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
According to a statement issued by the South African National Parks (SANParks), the incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. Preliminary information indicates that a private guide attached to the concession operator allegedly accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in the fatal injury of the tourist.
The deceased was part of a group that had been booked outside the park and had entered Kruger National Park specifically for a bush braai experience offered by a private concession operator that holds a valid permit to operate the facility within the park.
SANParks expressed its condolences following the tragedy. “SANParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” the organisation said in a statement.
It is further said that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently on the scene and has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. SANParks said the matter is now subject to a police investigation and that further details will be communicated once more information becomes available.
