Motorists Brace for Petrol Price Shock as October Hike Could Top R3 a Litre

South African motorists are facing another major blow at the pumps, with the latest fuel price data pointing to a petrol increase of more than R3 a litre in October.

According to the latest Central Energy Fund (CEF) figures, 95 unleaded petrol is currently showing an under-recovery of about R3.12 per litre, while 93 petrol is tracking an increase of around R2.93.

If the projections hold, the price of 95 petrol in Gauteng could rise to around R30.04 a litre, surpassing the previous record of R28.06 set in June. Diesel is also expected to see significant increases, with 50ppm diesel potentially reaching about R33.09 a litre inland.

The projected increases have been driven largely by higher international oil prices, while movements in the rand-dollar exchange rate have provided only limited relief. The final fuel prices will depend on conditions at the end of the review period and any adjustments made by government.

The new fuel prices are expected to take effect on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
