Gauteng MEC for Education, Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile has been appointed Acting Premier of the province while Premier Panyaza Lesufi takes time to recover from illness.
The Gauteng Provincial Government announced the appointment on Wednesday, saying Maile will serve as Acting Premier from Thursday, 3 September, until Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
According to the provincial government, the appointment was made in accordance with Section 131(1)(a) and Section 13 of the Constitution of South Africa.
During his time in the position, Maile will assume the duties, authority and responsibilities of the Office of the Premier to ensure the continued and smooth running of the Gauteng Provincial Government.
The government says the temporary appointment will also allow Lesufi, who is currently on sick leave, to fully recover before returning to his responsibilities.
The announcement comes as Maile steps into the province’s top executive role for a short period, ensuring that government operations continue without interruption while Lesufi focuses on his recovery.
