The City of Tshwane has condemned the vandalism of two Tshwane Bus Service buses during Spring Day celebrations in Lotus Gardens and Danville on Tuesday afternoon.
The city says the first incident happened at around 16h50 in Lotus Gardens, where a group of young people allegedly blocked the road, verbally abused the driver of bus number 1055 and demanded that the doors be opened. Some members of the group then climbed onto the roof of the bus, causing damage.
In a separate incident at around 17h10 in Danville, a group allegedly poured water on bus number 1111 and threw buckets at the vehicle. A stone was also thrown at the bus, shattering one of its side windows.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.
The City of Tshwane says the incidents are placing further pressure on an already strained bus fleet.
“These senseless acts place passengers, drivers and other road users at risk, while further straining the Tshwane Bus Service fleet.”
The city says it is already experiencing a shortage of operational buses, and the withdrawal of the damaged vehicles for assessment and repairs could further affect its ability to provide reliable public transport services.
The municipality has appealed to parents and communities to discourage destructive behaviour and urged residents to celebrate responsibly.
It has also warned that damaging municipal property is a criminal offence and says it will work with law enforcement authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
