The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has urged South Africans to take extra precautions as cold weather continues to affect parts of the country.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates issued by the South African Weather Service and follow all warnings from disaster management authorities.
Parents and caregivers are advised to ensure that children are dressed warmly, particularly during the early mornings and evenings, to reduce the risk of cold related illnesses.
The public is also warned to use heaters, braziers, paraffin stoves, candles and generators with caution to prevent fires, burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. Heating devices should never be left unattended or placed near flammable materials.
Government has further urged citizens to use electricity safely by avoiding overloaded plugs and illegal electricity connections, and to report weather related emergencies, blocked roads, fallen power lines and damaged infrastructure to their local authorities.
