Police and Gauteng education officials have confiscated weapons and illegal substances during a school safety search-and-seizure operation at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong, as authorities intensify efforts to curb gangsterism and criminal activity in schools.
The operation, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), was joined by Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile. During the raid, officials recovered several dangerous items, including knives and illegal substances believed to have been brought onto the school premises.
Beyond the confiscated items, the operation also exposed broader challenges affecting the school. According to the Gauteng Department of Education, five educators had not been reporting for duty, while concerns were also raised about poor learner academic performance.
Speaking during the operation, Maile said the findings highlighted the need for stronger interventions to restore discipline and ensure schools remain safe learning environments.
“Today’s SAPS-led school search and seizure operation uncovered serious challenges, including five educators who have not been reporting for duty, poor learner performance, and the confiscation of knives and illegal substances.”
The MEC said the initiative forms part of the Gauteng government’s ongoing school safety programme, which aims to tackle violence, gangsterism and substance abuse while creating environments where teaching and learning can take place without fear.
