The Gauteng Department of Health has officially opened a newly refurbished 27-bed Male Neurosurgical Ward at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, marking a significant investment in specialised healthcare services for patients requiring complex neurological treatment.
The upgraded ward, originally built in 1972, now features six Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and six high-care beds following an extensive refurbishment aimed at meeting modern healthcare infrastructure standards and improving patient care.
The facility provides specialised treatment for patients with brain injuries, spinal injuries, brain tumours, hydrocephalus, stroke-related neurosurgical conditions and other neurological disorders that require close monitoring.
According to the Gauteng Department of Health, the refurbishment has created “a safer, more efficient and patient-centred environment through improved bed spacing, enhanced infection prevention and control measures, better accessibility for healthcare professionals and improved overall patient safety.”
The department said the upgraded ward is expected to strengthen neurosurgical services by improving access to specialised care, enhancing clinical monitoring and supporting better rehabilitation outcomes. It is also expected to improve communication between healthcare teams and patients’ families, contributing to a better overall patient experience.
“The opening of the refurbished Male Neurosurgical Ward underscores the Gauteng Department of Health’s commitment to providing high-quality, specialised healthcare services and ensuring that patients receive care in a modern environment designed to support better clinical outcomes,” the department said.
The department added that the investment represents another important step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to critical neurosurgical services for communities across Gauteng and beyond.
