South Africans can expect a cold weekend ahead as a cold front has now made landfall, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures across parts of South Africa, with cold conditions expected to spread across several provinces. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says the cold temperatures are expected to persist until the weekend.
SAWS has urged residents to take precautions against the cold and to use heating devices responsibly. The weather service warned that heaters, braziers and other heating appliances should only be used in well-ventilated areas to reduce the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Residents are encouraged to dress warmly in layers, keep homes insulated by closing doors and windows, and regularly check on elderly people, young children and those living with chronic health conditions.
SAWS also warned that prolonged cold weather increases the risk of illnesses such as colds, flu, pneumonia and hypothermia. It further urged the public to keep flammable materials away from heat sources and never leave open flames unattended.
