Alleged cartel member and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry next week, as it continues investigating allegations of criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies.
Matlala has emerged as a central figure in the Commission’s inquiry into alleged corruption involving senior police officials. His legal representative is expected to confirm the exact date of his appearance before the Commission.
The development follows a ruling by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, where the court rejected an eight-year prison sentence that had been agreed upon between the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Matlala’s legal team.
The plea and sentencing agreement relates to the alleged R228-million Medicare24 tender fraud involving the South African Police Service Tshwane District. Instead of the proposed eight-year sentence, the court indicated that a 12-year direct prison term would be more appropriate.
Matlala must now decide whether to accept the court’s proposed sentence.
His testimony before the Madlanga Commission is expected to be closely watched, as it could provide further insight into allegations of corruption and organised criminal influence within law enforcement structures.
