The National Department of Health is intensifying efforts to get more children vaccinated as declining immunisation coverage raises concerns over the spread of preventable diseases across South Africa.
The department’s National Immunisation Campaign is focusing on zero-dose and under-immunised children, particularly those living in communities where vaccination coverage remains persistently low.
The warning comes as South Africa continues to record measles and rubella outbreaks, while sustained transmission of diphtheria has also been reported in parts of the country.
Health authorities say routine immunisation coverage has fallen severely across all 52 districts, increasing the risk of outbreaks and leaving more children vulnerable to diseases that can be prevented through vaccination.
The department is urging parents and caregivers not to delay their children’s vaccinations, emphasising that immunisation is not only about protecting one child, but also the wider community.
“Every child deserves protection,” the campaign says, encouraging parents to visit their nearest clinic and speak to healthcare workers about their children’s vaccination status.
The department says vaccines are tested and trusted, and that a single visit to a health facility can provide children with long-term protection.
