The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) arrested more than 58 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during road safety operations conducted across the metro over the weekend.
The operations, which ran from Friday until the early hours of Sunday, 26 July 2026, were carried out by regional and specialised policing units in Centurion, Mamelodi, Mabopane, Bronkhorstspruit, Sinoville and Pretoria North.
TMPD says the arrests are a worrying indication that many motorists continue to disregard the law and the safety of other road users.
“The fact that many of those arrested are young and well-educated individuals who knowingly choose to drive while impaired, putting their lives and the lives of others at grave risk, is overwhelmingly concerning,” the department said.
The metro police warned that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of road crashes, serious injuries and fatalities. Authorities have reiterated that motorists found driving while intoxicated will continue to face stringent legal consequences as the city intensifies its efforts to improve road safety.
TMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Yolanda Faro, condemned the reckless behaviour of motorists arrested during the operation and urged residents to make responsible travel arrangements before consuming alcohol.
“Plan ahead by arranging for a designated driver, using public transport, or calling a taxi or ride-hailing service. The safety of our roads depends on the collective commitment of every individual,” said Faro.
The department says it remains committed to enforcing the law and protecting road users through continued road safety operations across the City of Tshwane.
