The South African government has announced that operations at the Musina Temporary Repatriation Processing Centre will be significantly scaled down from a capacity of 20,000 to 1,500 people, effective 1 August 2026.
According to the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration, the decision follows a decline in the number of undocumented migrants requiring repatriation to their countries of origin. Government says the reduction in capacity will not affect its ability to process undocumented migrants or continue with deportation and repatriation operations.
The move is aimed at aligning resources with the current migration situation while maintaining effective border management, deportation, and repatriation efforts.
